For over 20 years, the team behind the franchise has tried to outdo themselves with bigger and wilder stunts with each subsequent sequel. And in terms of longevity, is probably Mission: Impossible’s most special effect of them all. Earlier this year, Cruise once again put his body on the line in; which may be the best action movie of the year. It's a lot easier to believe the onscreen spectacle when Cruise is actually physically present instead of being replaced by stuntmen or CGI. Mission: Impossible – Fallout is out on Blu-ray this week, and we were invited to learn more about the stunts that went into the film.
Our own Tara Bennett was even given the chance to do a little stunt driving of her own. Before taking off in a helicopter! According to Fallout's stunt coordinator and second unit director Wade Eastwood, the reason the stunts continue to resonate is that he, director Christopher McQuarrie, and Cruise are all dedicated to action in service of the story. 'It's very much an organic process,' said Eastwood. 'We're all storytellers, and that's important. So the three of us work out the best way. 'That's cool action, but is it good story?
Is it good character?' Tom's great at making sure the character stays true to story whether it's action or drama. Star jalsha serial. There's been car chases and bike chases before, but when it's subjective with Tom doing it all himself, and the story's driving it, and the camera's showing it – that is all Tom, there's no cheats – then we're on the journey with him. And that's what makes it unique.'
